CHICAGO, November 11, 2022— In the new hardcover picture book Silent Night, the beloved song is brought to life featuring illustrations by acclaimed artist Elena Selivanova.
The artwork is at once modern and timeless. Mary and Joseph are beautifully illustrated with serene expressions that hint at the wonder of the birth of Jesus. Shepherds, angels, and wise men are all included, giving rich context to the story of the birth of Christ. Children will also be drawn to the illustrations of animals in and around the stable.
The lyrics provide the text of the book, and allow the reader to linger over each line while relishing the beauty of the illustrations. This can also provide an "I spy" moment for children as they seek and find people, animals, and things in the pictures.
Silent Night, originally a poem written in 1818 by a young priest named Joseph Mohr, was set to music and played on guitar at Christmas Eve Mass as the organ in his church was not working. The rest of the history of the song is included in the book.
Loyola Press included both the sheet music and a QR code to scan to stream both English and Spanish versions of the song, making this book a truly interactive experience.
