CHICAGO, March 16, 2023 — In the new book Considering Jesus: The Human Experience of the Redeemer, Joseph A. Tetlow, SJ, goes beyond merely reporting the historical facts of the life of Christ or examining the theological significance of his life, to considering the lived experiences of the human Christ.
His approach allows readers to focus on and consider what Christ did and why, how he engaged his perceptions, values, and desires. In this way followers of Christ can immerse themselves in the incarnation in an entirely new way.
“The purpose of the book,” writes Fr. Tetlow, “is to help disciples of Christ prayerfully obey Jesus’ command: Learn of me, for I am meek and humble of heart.”
Considering Jesus follows Jesus from childhood to his Passion and Resurrection. Each chapter focuses on a passage of Scripture, then breaks down into two parts. “Context and Condition” provides the historical background, culture and customs, and how these would have shaped Jesus’ experience. Then, “Consider” applies these seven facets to Christ’s experience:
- the current public context of the event
- Jesus’ condition, acts, behaviors, and habits
- his perspective
- his perception of things seen and felt
- the values operating in Jesus, his context
- the desires that compelled Jesus
- the decisions Jesus made
“If we take seriously that Jesus became one of us—was incarnated,” writes Fr. Tetlow, “then we realize that he, too, engaged in his experience in all these ways as well.”
