CHICAGO, January 21, 2022—Aggressive and rapid social change is the norm now. Even prior to the effects of COVID-19, schools and families were caught in waves of vicissitude, unrest, and tension. This can lead to children becoming confused, unable to express themselves, or unsure of how to treat others. While schools are settings in which children learn values such as sharing, cooperation, honesty, and integrity, it is increasingly clear that this cannot only happen in the classroom. At school and at home, children need to learn the importance of living by values so that they can vocalize their emotions and attitudes; understand right from wrong; and develop confidence, sensitivity, and awareness. This is key in social-emotional learning, as children discover how to cope with life’s challenges in ways that are healthy, productive, and cooperative.
The new children’s book, A Whole Bunch of Values by Jennifer Moore-Mallinos, offers a positive, flexible, and engaging way for children to be exposed to “a whole bunch” of values—46 in all—while also learning to embrace people whose values may be different than their own. Values are presented as real-life situations that children can understand. For example, the value of altruism is expressed by volunteering at an animal shelter, and the value of generosity by gathering food and supplies for a family in need.
Each of the values, presented in alphabetical order, features a very brief story, including a fun but serious definition to help expand vocabulary. A simple question with each value opens up a conversation between children and parents or educators, in which the children can begin to think about the value, what it might mean to them, and how they could apply it in their lives. Adults can also express what the value means to them, the family, and the community.
A Whole Bunch of Values can be read independently by the child, but it is intended to be a book in which a child and adult work together to examine what it means to be a person of character, who lives by important values and respects and honors the values of others.
